Jimmy’s Quilts

After six months, Jimmy’s quilts for his room are finished!  It was such a great moment to see my son rest on the bed quilt today — smiling the whole time.  We even got a shot with his dog, Dunder.  Just above his bed is a wall hanging with animals illustrating the ABCs.  I am looking forward to many bedtime stories on this special quilt.  My goal was to use fun happy colors and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how they turned out!

Onto the details…

The bed quilt is full size at 84″ x 93″ using the Yellow Brick Road pattern by Atkinson Designs.  It is a great quilt for fat quarters.  Although this was my first time using the pattern for a bed size quilt, I have completed a lap quilt and several baby quilts with this pattern.  Each quilt looks so different with the color variations.  For this quilt, I used 24 fat quarters with my main inspiration from Amy Schimler’s original Animal Party collection.  I originally bought a half-yard of her Quilts for Kids Monkey Fabric when I was in New York for my cousin’s wedding in November 2009.  Since then, I have been collecting the Animal Party line and coordinating fabric!  Once I found out I was pregnant, I started to dig into this wonderful stash of fabric to pick my baby’s quilt fabrics.  As a side note, the line was designed for the Quilts for Kids organization, providing quilts for children in need — including babies in the NICU.

The wall hanging is a fabric panel that I chopped up and reassembled with sashing.  The panel is Jenn Ski’s A to Z.  Like Amy, her illustrations a fun, whimsical, and artistic.  She is currently releasing a new line with Moda called Ten Little Things.  It is hot off the press, as she just blogged about it today!  The panel was originally the length of the fabric and was vertical.  To hang over a bed, I redesigned it to have a horizontal layout.  The panel’s background color was originally a bright blue.  You would never know with the Kona Sand sashing and orange border.

Over the past month, I had to take a break from all other projects to complete Jimmy’s quilts.  Now that this project is complete, I should be able to get back into blogging.  I just started a new quilt class and I am finishing up some major projects that have never been shown!  It will be a fun blogging month!

Oh and since, I am very excited for this quilt, I will be posting everywhere:
